The Stone Creek Valley Lions Club’s monthly hootenanny will return at 6 p.m. Saturday, May 28, at the Lions Barn on Cold Springs Road in Oneida Township. The Lions kitchen will be open at 5 p.m. and the meal will be a chicken, fish or shrimp basket, which includes applesauce, cupcake and drink for $7 with a full menu of other items available.

The Lions are happy to continue the tradition of hootenannies and look forward to getting back to helping the community.

There is never a charge to attend the hootenanny; however, a jar is put out to collect donations for a local family or individual in need. This month’s recipient is Jameson McBride.

Jameson is the 3-year-old son of Adam and Sara McBride. He was diagnosed with a brain mass April 1, 2022. He was transported to UPMC Children’s in Pittsburgh that day. The mass was preventing his cerebral spinal fluid to drain normally causing hydrocephalus. Upon arrival to Pittsburgh, they placed an external ventricular drain, then April 4, he underwent surgery to remove the mass. He also had to have surgery Good Friday to have a ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunt placed because his brain still wasn’t draining enough of his cerebral spinal fluid. The surgeons were able to remove all of his tumor (pilocytic Astrocytoma) but he will need to have frequent scans for the next 10 years just to make sure the tumor doesn’t return.

Post surgery, Jameson suffers from Posterior Fossa Syndrome, which doctors said usually happens after a tumor is removed in this region. Each patient is different, but Jameson has coordination issues, bilateral upper and lower extremity weaknesses, he was only able to say a few words and had some swallowing difficulties. He is progressing every day. His swallowing issues have resolved and his speech is improving. He is working on walking with a walker right now and they have fitted him for a right ankle brace to help his right foot flexion. He was set to be discharged from inpatient rehab May 19 but will need to continue therapy three days a week in Altoona or State College.

For 15 years, the Stone Valley Lions Club has hosted monthly hootenannies to help those in need in our community. To date, the hootenannies have raised over $161,000 which has gone directly to an individual or family that had fallen on hard times. The club is seeking musicians to supplement the hootenanny band. If you are a musically talented and want to help your community — we want you!. Please contact Shelly Dietz at (814) 599-7000 for more information.

The SCV Lions Club is always looking for new members. If you enjoy helping others, talk to any Lions Club member about how you can join.
